Dr. Steven Idell, Vice President for Research at the UT Health Northeast joined UT Health Northeast in July 1984 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine from Temple University School of Medicine, where he was an Assistant Professor and Director of the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Penn. Dr. Idell received his MD (1977) and PhD (in Physiology, 1987) degrees from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Idell has served in several roles at UT Health Northeast, including Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit, Chief of Pulmonary, Chairman of the Department of Specialty Care Services, and Director for Clinical Research. In March 2003, he was appointed Vice President for Research.

Dr. Idell was appointed as the recipient of the Temple Chair in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in September 1996. This was the first endowed chair approved by the UT Board of Regents at UT Health Northeast.

Dr. Idell has published and presented a total of 260 papers and abstracts and is currently involved in research projects funded by six grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has received a Clinical Investigator Award from the NIH as well as additional grants from the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association, among other organizations. In all, these represent more than $10 million in external funding to UT Health Northeast. He recently received the first NIH Program Project Grant (PPG) to be awarded to UT Health Northeast. This five-year grant will provide insight about new ways to protect the lung against injury and excessive scarring. The $7.5 million grant will begin August 2005.
