The Department of Medical Education plays a vital role in UT Health Northeast’s mission to "serve East Texas and beyond through excellent patient care and community health, comprehensive education, and innovative research" by providing oversight of all graduate medical education training including both the Family Medicine and the Occupational Medicine residency programs making certain both programs meet and exceed ACGME standards.
In addition, the department coordinates and oversees regular rotations of medical students from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth and provides oversight for medical students on rotation from UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
The Department of Medical Education is responsible for all continuing medical education (CME) activities. The mission of UT Health Northeast’s CME program is to provide high quality educational activities designed to enhance physicians’ commitment to lifelong learning. The ultimate goal is to promote and further the practice of evidence-based and cost-effective healthcare in keeping with UT Health Northeast’s mission to provide excellent patient care. The Department of Medical Education and its CME office sponsors and coordinates a wide range of innovative continuing educational activities including numerous ongoing series (Grand Rounds, Tumor Board, Pediatric Grand Rounds, etc.), plus additional symposia and other live outreach educational activities throughout the year.
In addition to GME and CME, UT Health Northeast is the only area hospital accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education to sponsor pharmacy continuing education. The Department of Medical Education provides administrative oversight of this accreditation working with the pharmacy department to offer innovative and applicable educational opportunities for pharmacists.
The Department of Medical Education also oversees and manages all life support training in CPR, ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
