Cloggers, jump rope teams, a jazz band, classic cars, free health screenings, plus seminars on healthy eating for children and how to beat diabetes - that’s just part of the fun-filled lineup for the 2005 Healthy Family Affair from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 271 and State Highway 155.

Free health screenings offered at UTHSCT’s Healthy Family Affair include body mass index, blood pressure, blood sugar, carotid ultrasound, cholesterol, sleep evaluations, A1c for diabetes, and bone density. In addition, parents can learn about child safety, childhood immunizations, and healthy eating for children while those children enjoy supervised activities nearby.

Special seminars for seniors will be offered: “All About Dementia,” Master Gardening Fitness,” “Getting a Good Night’s Sleep - Fighting Insomnia,” and “Beating Diabetes.” Registration is required for the senior seminars. To register, call (903) 877-5122.

Fun activities for the whole family include the renowned Heart Throbbers Jump Rope Team based at Tyler’s Jones Elementary MST Academy. The team has been chosen to represent the American Heart Association as an All-Star Demo Team to promote its Jump Rope for Heart. The Heart Throbbers have performed in numerous venues locally and made an appearance at the 2002 Grammy Awards. The Mineola Jumpers also will be on stage and will conduct a jump rope clinic after their performance.

Other groups who will perform include the Holly Lake Cloggers and the Grand Saline Jazz Band. In addition, there will be classic cars, Master Gardener demonstrations, and make-up consultations for adults, and face painting, miniature train rides, and building healthy snacks for kids.
