Monday, April 24, 2006

Charles Blair, Ph.D., RN, will speak on “Grandparents Raising Grand Children” from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at PATH, 324 W. Front St. in Tyler. Dr. Blair is director of Gerontology and Behavioral Health Sciences Research at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.

“Raising grandchildren is a growing challenge for many grandparents. These challenges are physical, psychological, and social in nature. This presentation will provide information and strategies to help grandparents confront many of these challenges,” Dr. Blair said.

The free class is sponsored by Parent Services Center. The class will examine the complex situations faced by many grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. Participants will be able to talk about their own experiences. In addition, they will find out about books, articles, and other resources designed to help them. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, more than 2.5 million grandparents were raising their grandchildren at that time.

Parent Services Center is a Tyler-based nonprofit organization that seeks to strengthen families and the community through education and support for all people who care for children.

The class is free, but advance registration is required. For more information or to register, call (903) 595-2235.
