“Celebration 2006: The ART of Healthy Living” is the theme of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler Celebration to be held Thursday, Nov. 2, at the Harvey Convention Center, 2000 W. Front St. in Tyler.
"This year’s ‘Celebration 2006: The ART of Healthy Living’ will raise funds for our new Aging Research and Treatment (ART) unit, a unique inpatient setting where advanced techniques in geriatric care that promote and maintain healthy aging during an acute illness are practiced. It is another example of UTHSCT’s dedication to the field of aging – from providing excellent patient care to conducting pioneering research into diseases that affect all of us as we age,” UTHSCT President Dr. Kirk A. Calhoun said.
UT System Chancellor Mark Yudof and UT System Board of Regents Chairman James A. Huffines are expected to attend the event. In addition, business, civic, and political leaders from throughout East Texas are among the almost 800 people expected to attend the gala dinner and dance. The Celebration is the biggest annual event of its kind – a formal, sit-down dinner and dance – held in Tyler.
Proceeds from the Celebration will benefit the new ART unit, which will employ a multi-disciplinary team of geriatricians, geriatric-trained nurse practitioners, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and pharmacists. The team will work to maintain patients’ abilities to perform daily tasks by minimizing the adverse effects of procedures, tests, and medications, while helping reduce length of stay.
Last year’s Celebration raised over $170,000 for The Texas Lung Injury Institute. Since the first Celebration in 2002, the event has raised more than $535,000 for advanced patient care and research at the Health Center.
