Three UTHCT employees promoted; new outpatient dietitian joins UT Health Center

Three employees of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler have been promoted, while a new outpatient dietitian recently was hired.
Kathleen V. Butler, MD, chief of the division of Pediatrics and medical director of UTHSCT’s Pediatric Clinic, has been appointed chief of quality for the Health Center.
In this new position, Dr. Butler will provide leadership and oversight of all quality and outcomes initiatives, performance improvement, and patient safety and reviews by external organizations that assess quality and performance improvement at the Health Center.
Dr. Butler, an assistant professor of pediatrics at UTHSCT and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, also will continue to work full time in her clinical practice. She has a Master of Business Administration and Master of Arts in Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Butler has been with UTHSCT for five years.
Tom Craig has been named director of Library Services. He has served as interim director since February, taking the place of Elaine Wells, who retired. As director, he oversees the Watson W. Wise Medical Research Library, the only full-service medical library in the region with access to the latest editions of medical journals, medical databases on the Web, and patient-friendly books and Web sites.
Craig joined UTHSCT in 1981 and served as assistant director of Library Services from 1986 until his appointment as interim director. He has a Master of Science in Library Science from North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University.
Jan Miller has been promoted to director of Laboratory Services at UTHSCT. Since July 2005, she has served as assistant director of Laboratory Services. Miller takes the place of long-time director Ileice Baker, who retired. Miller joined the Health Center two years ago.
Miller received her American Society of Clinical Pathology Certification from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Medical Technology in affiliation with The University of Texas at Arlington upon completion of the four-year program. She received a bachelor’s of science from LeTourneau University in Longview.
Karla Wallace has been hired as UTHSCT’s new outpatient dietitian. Before joining the Health Center, she was the outpatient diabetes educator/dietitian at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview.
Wallace has her master’s in nutrition from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches and a bachelor’s of science in nutrition from Texas A&M University. She is certified to work with patients using insulin pumps.
