The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler has selected the members of the committee in charge of preparations for “Celebration 2006: The ART of Healthy Living.”

The theme of “Celebration 2006” is “The AART of Healthy Living,” and proceeds from the gala will benefit the new Aging Research and Treatment – or ART – Unit, part of UTHSCT’s Center for Healthy Aging. ART will provide advanced inpatient care for senior adults. Celebration 2006 will be held Thursday, Nov. 2, at Harvey Convention Center in Tyler.

“We are pleased that members of the community are willing to devote their time and effort to benefit the Health Center and enable it to fulfill its mission of providing excellent patient care and community health, comprehensive education, and innovative research,” UTHSCT President Dr. Kirk A. Calhoun said.

“With the ART Unit, the Health Center will be better able to serve the needs of acutely ill East Texas seniors and their families,” Dr. Calhoun said.

Annette Findley is chairperson of the Celebration 2006 Committee. “I feel very honored to have been asked to chair the committee organizing this year’s Celebration 2006 – ‘The ART of Healthy Living.’ One of the fastest growing segments of Smith County is its senior population. The University of Texas Health Center is involved in many ground-breaking initiatives designed to meet the needs of seniors by furthering the healing of the whole person – body, mind, and spirit,” Mrs. Findley said.

“The Celebration 2006 Committee is looking forward to sharing this exciting evening with dinner and dance. We invite everyone to come and celebrate ‘The Art of Healthy Living’ with us,” she said.

Members of the committee are: Barbara Bass, Shirley Boone, Kay Breedlove, Neshia Brown, Jeanette Deas Calhoun, Geri Cohen, Kris Curtis, Debby Davis, Maxine Flatt, Genelle Gann, Candice Negem Gast, LaVerne Gollob, and Mildred Grinstead.

Also, Joann Grooms, Joyce Hudnall, Laura Hyde, Joanne Idell, Carolyn Low, Verlaine MacClements, Marsha Nelson, Jill Ramey, Veretta Rider, Cynthia Riter, Linda Sellers, Rachel Taylor, Audrey Wharton, and Portia Wilson. Ex-officio members of the committee are Kimberly Ashley and Rhonda Scoby.

Last year’s event raised $170,206 for UTHSCT’s Texas Lung Injury Institute. Since the first gala in 2002, more than half a million dollars has been raised for life-saving initiatives at UT Health Science Center.
