The presidents of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and The University of Texas at Tyler were hailed as two great leaders during groundbreaking ceremonies April 26 for the new UT Health Clinic on the UT Tyler campus.

“This is a historic occasion, a wonderful thing for the city of Tyler and for both institutions,” said Herbert Buie, chairman of both the UTHSCT and UT Tyler development boards. UTHSCT operates the clinic, which opened in August 2004 in a temporary facility on the UT Tyler campus. It provides health care to UT Tyler students and employees.

“I’m glad to see both these institutions working together on such a project. We hope to be here on this spot dedicating the $3 million clinic building in March 2006,” he told the crowd of more than 60 people at the groundbreaking. Mr. Buie also praised the leadership of UTHSCT President Dr. Kirk A. Calhoun and UT Tyler President Rodney H. Mabry.

The new 10,000-square-foot UTHSCT facility will house the faculty and student clinic. In addition, it will have a new medical clinic for the community, offering services in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and allergy, as well as other specialties. It will be located on the UT Tyler campus at the corner of University Boulevard and Patriot Drive.

“UT System Chancellor Mark Yudof is encouraging collaboration between The University of Texas System campuses. Tyler has been a leader in these collaborative projects. This new UTHSCT clinic will provide easy access to health care for UT Tyler faculty, staff, and students, as well as for the community,” Dr. Calhoun said.

“In addition to health care services, UTHSCT medical professionals will provide seminars and educational sessions on health issues of interest to community residents,” Dr. Calhoun said.

President Mabry said, “This clinic really is a project of the Health Center. This successful collaboration is a tribute to Dr. Calhoun and how well the two institutions are working together. Business at the UT Health Clinic has exceeded expectations, which speaks to the quality and range of care offered there.”
