New head of legal affairs, two physician assistants join UTHSCT

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler has named Lisa Mary Moran general counsel and executive director of legal affairs.

In addition, two physician assistants, Russell Hayes and Mia Hamic, recently joined the Health Science Center.

Moran is an experienced attorney in the field of health care law. Before coming to UTHSCT, she was an associate general counsel at FAIRPAY solutions Inc., in Addison, Texas.

Moran was also an associate general counsel with Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas, where she handled medical malpractice and other cases.

In addition, she was an associate in the medical malpractice litigation section of Strasburger & Price, LLP, in Dallas.

Moran received her law degree from the South Texas College of Law, where she was on both Mock Trial and Moot Court varsity teams and was president of the Board of Advocates.

She was appointed a member of the national organization of the Order of the Barristers, a lifetime honor that is awarded upon graduation.

Capt. Hayes joins UTHSCT’s Internal Medicine Clinic after two years’ of service as a primary flight medical officer for a 600-member aviation battalion in the U.S. Army. He provided care to soldiers in a 2,000-member task force that was deployed to Kuwait and Iraq.

During that time, Capt. Hayes supervised a team of 11 combat medical specialists. Before his deployment, Capt. Hayes was a physician assistant at two medical clinics in Austin.

He has a bachelor’s in physician assistant studies from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and will receive his master’s in physician assistant studies with a specialty in urgent and critical care from that institution in February 2008.

Capt. Hayes is certified in advanced cardiac life support and basic life support.

Hamic comes to UTHSCT’s Center for Healthy Aging after two years as a physician assistant in a cardiology practice in Shreveport.

She also has worked as an emergency room technician in two Louisiana hospitals and as a physical therapy exercise technician.

Hamic has a bachelor’s in physician assistant studies from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Allied Health in Shreveport.

In addition, Hamic has a bachelor’s in fitness and wellness with a concentration in clinical studies from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La.
