GILMER – Cancer, one of the scariest words in the English language.

Do you know what your risk for developing cancer is? Do you know what steps you can take to lower that risk?

These and similar questions will be answered at “Cancer 101: The Basics That You Need to Know,” a free seminar scheduled for 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at Gilmer National Bank, 900 N. Wood in Gilmer. The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler sponsors the seminar.

Coty Ho, MD, associate professor of medicine at UTHSCT and chief of medical oncology, will outline the screenings available for various cancers and discuss when it’s appropriate to have these screenings.

He also will talk about the latest in cancer treatment and research.

Dr. Ho, who is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, was a medical director of a private research firm that specialized in developing cancer drugs before joining UTHSCT in 2007.

He also was an assistant professor of medicine and oncology in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Winship Cancer Institute at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

He completed a Medical Oncology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine’s Sydney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center in Baltimore.

Free blood pressure screening and free colorectal screening test kits will be available beginning at 9:30 a.m., with the presentation starting at 10 a.m.

The health education seminar is free, but seating is limited and reservations are required. Refreshments will be provided.
