David B. Coultas, MD, has been appointed chairman of the Department of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.

He joins UTHSCT as a professor of medicine.

“Before coming to the Health Center, Dr. Coultas was professor and associate chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center in Jacksonville, Fla. He has significant research experience in the areas of epidemiology and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We look forward to adding his expertise to that of the UTHSCT faculty,” said Dr. Steven Brown, UTHSCT’s chief medical officer.

Board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary disease, Dr. Coultas is interested in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, and occupational lung disease.

His other interests include community health and epidemiology, which is the study of the incidence, distribution, and control of disease within a population.

“I wanted to be at an institution where I could work with the faculty and staff in pulmonary diseases and occupational lung diseases. The Health Center offers excellent research and educational opportunities as well as first-rate patient care,” Dr. Coultas said.

“I hope to expand research in pulmonary disease and other areas of medicine. I want to develop stronger collaborations between UTHSCT physicians who conduct clinical research and UTHSCT scientists who do basic biomedical research in the lab. I want to help build the Health Center’s reputation as a regional center for treating pulmonary diseases,” he said.

In addition, Dr. Coultas wants to examine how effective traditional health care is when it comes to giving patients what they desire from it. “I want to know if we are really improving their quality of life and doing it effectively,” he said.

Dr. Coultas joined the University of Florida Health Sciences Center in 2001. From 1986 through 2000, he was a professor of medicine at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

He received his medical degree from the University of Florida Medical School in Gainesville. Dr. Coultas completed his residency and pulmonary training at the University of New Mexico.
