UT Health Science Center at Tyler offers free diabetes education classes starting Tuesday, Sept. 9

Have you been recently diagnosed with diabetes? Do you know how to best manage your diabetes to maintain long-term health?

Where can you get reliable and up-to-date information about the latest advances in diabetes care?

These and other questions will be answered during the upcoming Empower Diabetes class at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.

A new Empower series of four free diabetes education sessions begins Tuesday, Sept. 9, in Hudnall Auditorium at UTHSCT, 11937 U.S. 271 in Tyler.

The goal of the Empower program is to teach you how to manage your diabetes. Each free session is offered from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9; Thursday, Sept. 11; Tuesday, Sept. 16; and Thursday, Sept. 18.

Sessions cover different topics, including high and low blood sugar, meal planning, glucose monitoring, exercise and diabetes, medications and insulin administration, and foot care.

Instructors are David Shafer, MD, director of the Center for Diabetes Care; Gerry Brown, physician assistant; Celia Pechak, physical therapist; Donna Walker, RN; and Karla Wallace, MS, a registered and licensed dietitian.
