Flu shots now available at UT Health Science Center

Friday, October 24, 2008

As the leaves fall and the days grow cooler, it’s time again for one of your autumn rituals: an annual flu shot.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler currently is holding flu shot clinics through Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008.

Flu shots will be given each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Room E416 of the Riter Center for Advanced Medicine on the UTHSCT campus, 11937 U.S. Highway 271 in Tyler.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 36,000 people die from the flu each year in the United States. The CDC recommends flu shots for:

Children aged 6 months and older, through their 19th birthday (new guideline issued this year)

Pregnant women

People 50 years of age and older

People with chronic medical conditions

People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities

People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including health care workers, household contacts of high risk persons, and household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age. Children who are not yet 6 months old are too young to be vaccinated.

Cost is $24 per vaccination; there is no cost for individuals covered by Medicare who bring their Medicare cards.
