UTHCT joins with Hospice of East Texas to extend inpatient hospice services

Thursday, November 10, 2005

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler has joined with Hospice of East Texas to provide inpatient hospice care at UTHSCT beginning Nov. 15.

Hospice of East Texas at UTHSCT will be a seven-bed unit operated by Hospice of East Texas. Karie Praszek, MD, a UTHSCT hospitalist with substantial hospice experience, will provide a leadership role for Hospice of East Texas at UTHSCT.

"This expansion of Hospice of East Texas inpatient services will allow patients with life-limiting illnesses who live in the northeastern part of our service area to receive inpatient care closer to home," said Marjorie Ream, the president and chief executive officer of Hospice of East Texas. "The needs of patients and their families are our highest priority."

"This collaboration is an example of UTHSCT’s commitment to excellent patient care. It will provide a much-needed service to East Texans and will complement many of the programs now in place at the Health Center," said UTHSCT President Dr. Kirk A. Calhoun.

Hospice of East Texas, a nonprofit agency, has been a vital part of East Texas since 1982. It serves patients and families in Smith and 12 other Northeast Texas counties regardless of their disease, age, sex, race, or ability to pay.

Up to 28 patients at a time are cared for at HomePlace, the Hospice inpatient facility in Tyler. Inpatient care is short-term and reserved for patients whose end-of-life care needs cannot be met at home or in a nursing home. Hospice staff also care for approximately 270 patients in their homes or in nursing facilities.

The agency provides comfort care and symptom management that neither hastens nor postpones death for patients with life-limiting illnesses. It also provides bereavement support for their families.

Hospice of East Texas serves residents of Smith, Anderson, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Marion, Panola, Rains, Rusk, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood counties.
