The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler :: Breath of Life Mobile
What is the Breath of Life Program?
The Breath of Life program is a community-based program designed to provide comprehensive medical care for children with asthma at their schools - to bring quality care to the children who need it most! UT Health Northeast has joined this vital organization that began at USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. Because of its success in controlling asthma and improving the lives of affected children, the program has expanded to other sites, including Phoenix, Baltimore, Chicago, Mobile - and now East Texas!
What is the UT Health Northeast Breath of Life Mobile Asthma Clinic?
The Breath of Life Mobile Asthma Clinic is a large, custom-built mobile clinic equipped with state-of-the-art technology used by asthma specialists to help diagnose and treat asthma. A team of specially trained healthcare providers will be traveling to different schools throughout East Texas to identify and treat children with asthma. They will undergo a history, a physical examination, and pulmonary function testing (a breathing test that can tell how well the lungs are working). Children diagnosed with asthma will receive a comprehensive, individualized asthma management program as well as education on self-management so they can care for their asthma at home. Regular follow-up appointments will ensure that the plan is working.
The effectiveness of this approach has been well documented. Children who have participated in the Breathmobile Program in other cities have had fewer missed school days due to asthma-related problems, fewer asthma attacks, reduced numbers of Emergency Room visits, fewer admissions to a hospital, and significant improvement in their quality of life.
