The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler :: Heart & Lung Center
- The Center for Biomedical Research
- We're proud to say that we are the biotechnology leader in this region. Our goal is to become a national leader in biomedical research.
- Center for Pulmonary & Infectious Disease Control
- We are committed to research that will further our understanding of tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases.
It’s Our Passion
Six decades ago, we saw our first patient with lung disease. Today our patients come from all over the United States to receive care from our adult and pediatric lung disease specialists, our interventional pulmonologists, specialists in allergy and immunology, radiologists, pathologists, and our experts in infectious diseases and sleep medicine.
State-of-the-art technology, research, and the newest treatments and techniques are at work here every day. Many of our adult and pediatric lung disease patients are finding new and exciting treatment options for extending and improving their quality of life.
In addition to providing compassionate diagnostic and routine health care, the pulmonary center offers preventive care and education in a variety of areas, including:
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
Cancers of the Chest – Lung, Breast
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic Respiratory Failure
Occupational Lung Disease
ALLERGY AND IMMUNOLOGIC DISEASES
Allergies – Environmental and Food
Immune Deficiency Disorders
Mycobacterial and Respiratory Infections
Because of our long and proud history, outstanding physicians with special expertise in the treatment of lung diseases have been drawn to UT Health Northeast to carry on the legacy. UT Health Northeast is home to the largest team of physicians in Northeast Texas dedicated to diagnosing and treating pulmonary disease.
Our pulmonary pathologist is the only one in North Texas and one of only about 100 in the world. A newly identified bacteria, Nocardia wallacei, that causes a number of human infections, including pneumonia, was named for one of our infectious disease specialists. More than medicine, what makes our physicians special? The care and concern they show to our patients every day.
EXCEPTIONAL EXPERTISE IN DIAGNOSTIC TESTING
Behind every great physician caring for patients is a strong diagnostic testing team – physicians and other health professionals experienced in laboratory testing, imaging, and other diagnostic testing tools. UT Health Northeast is known for its highly qualified and experienced specialists in the field of pulmonary disease diagnostics.
With the only pulmonary pathologist in our region, our pathology services include cutting-edge clinical and anatomical diagnostic testing as well as intra-procedural immediate, real-time evaluations.
Imaging tests include x-rays, computer tomography (CT Scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET).
Pulmonary function testing, which measures how well the lungs take in and release air and how well they move gases such as oxygen from the atmosphere into the body’s circulation.
Over the last five years, scientists in our Center for Biomedical Research have been awarded more than $70 million in research grants, with many of those dollars coming from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – the gold standard for research recognition and prestige. Ongoing research in areas such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute lung injury, lung cancer, and pulmonary fibrosis help to bring new treatments from the laboratory to the patient.
Once biomedical science has discovered a new treatment, clinical research takes it to the next level. The health of each of us has been improved because of advances in science and technology and the willingness of individuals to participate in clinical trials.
