Research, Centers and Institutes

In the relentless pursuit of cures for some of the most challenging diseases of our time, The University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center (HSC) investigators conduct research that includes clinical, translational, and basic science aimed at improving the quality of human life.

As a testament to our capability and strength, HSC investigators successfully conduct competitive research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Moreover, HSC is home to an impressive array of public health and prevention research leading to community and other interventions helping to reduce the burden of disease, injury, and suffering among our vulnerable populations. These efforts have garnered tens of millions of dollars in competitive research funding for the region from agencies such as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), which is part of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Center for Biomedical Research

Investigators in the Center for Biomedical Research are advancing healthcare one discovery at a time. A new intervention for the treatment of pleural loculation called single chain urokinase plasminogen activator (scuPA) is being commercialized in anticipation of near-term clinical trial testing through a partnership with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Heartland TB Center

The mission of Heartland National TB Center is to build capacity with our partners. We will share expertise in the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis by developing and implementing cutting-edge training, delivering expert medical consultation, providing technical assistance, and designing innovative educational and consultative products. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the programs and initiatives taking place at the Heartland National TB Center are another example of efforts to fight for a better quality of life through research, education, and training.

Northeast Texas Consortium (NETnet)

Texas Lung Injury Institute

The Texas Lung Injury Institute (TLII) provides state-of-the-art research that advances our understanding of the pathogenesis of lung disease and its treatment. To promote this vital research, HSC created the Texas Lung Injury Institute (TLII) in 2004. Recent exciting discoveries made by TLII investigators promise to improve therapy for severe, currently untreatable lung diseases, including: Acute lung injury (ALI), Pulmonary brosis (scarring of the lungs), Lung cancer, and malignant mesothelioma (a fatal cancer of the chest wall).
