Center for Clinical Research
The mission of the Center for Clinical Research is to provide high-quality, cost-effective clinical research services to our clients so that tomorrow’s medicine can reach our patients as soon as possible. To fulfill our research commitment, we pursue both basic and bedside research that addresses clinically important problems. Our clinical research effort spans more than half a decade of quality and timely investigations. This effort includes cooperative projects with numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies and government agencies, including the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We have extensive experience working with contract research organizations (CRO’s) as intermediaries in clinical research.
All clinical studies conducted at UT Health Northeast are performed within the guidelines of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The staff of the Center for Clinical Research works closely with the various divisions of The UT Health Northeast to complete Phase I through Phase IV trials. Our research center employs individuals who are certified clinical research coordinators (CCRC’s) to ensure that our research activities are conducted utilizing GOOD CLINICAL PRACTICE standards. Our clinical staff is well trained and represents all disciplines of medical delivery. Our physician investigators are experienced and dedicated to performing high-quality studies. These studies are carefully selected and are subject to ongoing quality review.
Many projects have resulted in national or international recognition, publication of peer-reviewed papers, and presentation at prestigious national and international meetings. Our clinical research efforts have been very productive in regard to contracted recruitment goals and valuable patients with timely data completion and minimum data queries.

Modern Facilities and Infrastructure
UT Health Northeast is a regional and state referral center with both a large outpatient clinic facility and a physically adjacent hospital available for clinical research. We have an up-to-date physical plant and the latest diagnostic and support equipment available. We provide our patient base with a multi-specialty mix of both primary and consultative care, and many of our patients enjoy long-term doctor-patient relationships in the clinic and hospital setting. The East Texas area offers a stable population with health care needs unique to both urban and rural regions. We have developed information systems to speed identification and recruitment of patients for clinical research, and have a regional reputation which encourages referral of individuals for inclusion in research protocols.
Our clinical laboratories offer a wide range of services to support clinical research. The laboratory staff are well trained and service oriented.
In addition to the clinical services offered by UT Health Northeast, the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology provides experienced faculty to assist in the design and conduct of clinical research studies. This department maintains large data bases, performs statistical analysis, and assists clinical researchers in designing well-planned studies. The latest in computing software and hardware and access to numerous off-campus computing facilities, including the CRAY system, offer broad opportunities. The Health Science Center is completing installation of a campus-wide fiber-optic backbone that will further our clinical research efforts.
The Health Science Center supports an active telecommunications office. This technology can be used to access remote patient care areas and provide video conferences, as well as rapid transmission of clinical data for expert review.
THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER AT TYLER:
THE CHOICE IN QUALITY CARE, RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
Ask any of the thousands of patients who come each year to UT Health Northeast what they like about us, and you will hear overwhelmingly that it is the quality of care that brought them here.
People choose to come to The UT Health Northeast not only for the care they receive, but also because of the outstanding physicians and qualified nurses who have been recruited to practice at UT Health Northeast from renowned treatment centers across the nation. Often patients self-refer to UT Health Northeast in an effort to become involved in clinical research studies. The clinical side of our institution is supported by the only graduate medical residency program in East Texas, and our research program has been cited as one of the top facilities in Texas by Nature magazine.
WE’RE PART OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SYSTEM
Since joining The University of Texas System in 1977, we have evolved into an acute care facility while expanding our research and education mission. During our association with the UT System, UT Health Northeast has emerged as a regional health care facility for Texans needing specialists in such areas as adult and pediatric pulmonary disease, cardiology, primary care medicine, occupational medicine, sleep medicine, and oncology.
OUR HOSPITAL, CLINICS, AND SERVICES ARE ALL UNDER ONE ROOF
Many people see their physicians in one office, have their lab or diagnostic imaging tests in another building, and are admitted to a hospital when necessary at a third location. UT Health Northeast has all of its clinics, services, and the hospital under one roof. We have 70 board-certified physicians in over 30 clinics and the latest in lab testing (pathology) and radiology, including a new state-of-the-art MRI. In 1996, there were over 140,000 outpatient clinic visits.
