Brown-Elliott, Barbara A., MS,MT(ASCP)SM
Research Assistant Professor, Microbiology
Supervisor, Mycobacteria/Nocardia Laboratory
Contact: Barbara.Elliott@uthct.edu
Research Interests:
Mycobacteria, Nocardia, other aerobic actinomycetes
Research Overview:
- Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and the study of antibiotics in the treatment of infections caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria( NTM), Nocardia and other aerobic actinomycetes.
- Testing of new antibiotics and development of better standardization of antimicrobial susceptibility test methods for the NTM, Nocardia and other aerobic actinomycetes. Defining mechanisms and genetics of drug resistance in the NTM.
- Characterization and taxonomy of new pathogenic ( disease producing) species of NTM and Nocardia. Previous studies have resulted in naming of several new species, including Mycobacterium mucogenicum, Mycobacterium goodii, Mycobacterium wolinskyi, Mycobacterium bacteremicum, Mycobacterium franklinii, Nocardia pseudobrasiliensis, and Nocardia wallacei.
