Philosophy
The Department of Microbiology (Mycobacteria/Nocardia Laboratory) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler serves as a research center and a clinical (reference) laboratory facility within the institution. The research goals of the department involve taxonomic, biochemical, antimicrobial, and molecular studies to try to better understand the epidemiology and treatment of diseases due to the nontuberculous mycobacteria and related aerobic actinomycetes.
The clinical (reference) portion of the laboratory functions to perform identification by molecular techniques and susceptibility testing of clinically important nontuberculous mycobacteria and other related aerobic actinomycetes submitted from laboratories world wide. Additionally, the department provides valuable resource information about treatment of these organisms and their diseases and is a valuable asset to clinicians and researchers locally, nationally, and internationally.
