Department Information


The University Police Department, under the direction of Chief Robert Cromley, is responsible for campus security at UT Health Northeast. UT Health Northeast campus is situated on some 655 acres at the intersection of US Hwy 271 and SH 155, in northeastern Smith County.

At present, the University Police Department’s authorized staff includes 5 commissioned police officers, 12 non-commissioned telecommunication/guards and 3 civilian personnel.

Police officers with the UT System are required to complete the UT System Police Academy in Austin, Texas. The academy consists of approximately 20 weeks of intense training in all areas of police work, as well as UT System Policies and Procedures and the UT Board of Regents Rules and Regulations.

Officers are responsible for a full range of public safety services, including all crime reports, investigations, medical emergencies, fire emergencies, traffic accidents, enforcement of laws, including regulating underage drinking, the use of controlled substances, weapons violations, and all other incidents requiring police assistance.

In addition, the University Police Department provides a wide range of services for the convenience and safety of patients, faculty, staff and visitors. Officers routinely provide services such as vehicle jump-starts, unlocks, and safe-walk escorts.

You can report crimes to the University Police Department 24 hours a day by dialing extension 5297 or 903-877-5297 (for non-emergencies) and extension 4444 from a campus phone for emergencies. Trained police dispatchers are available 24 hours a day to answer all calls. For administrative business, dial 903-877-7454. the office hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

At the UT Health Northeast, safety is a primary consideration in the maintenance, grounds keeping and lighting of the campus. If police officers or security guards should discover a broken window, door lock, or non-functioning light, the Physical Plant Department is notified. Patients, faculty, staff and visitors may also call the Police Department at extension 5297 to report any safety or security hazard.
