General Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Are you ACGME accredited?

Yes, we are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as a 5 – year general surgery training program

How do I submit my application?

We accept applications through ERAS.

Will you be offering virtual Interviews?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will conduct all interviews virtually via Microsoft Teams.

What is the application deadline?

Our deadline for applications is December 31st.

Do you require prior US clinical Experience?

Prior US clinical experience is preferred but not required

 

When should I arrive for my interview and is there a Pre-Interview dinner?

There will be a welcome dinner the evening prior to your interview from 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. Attendance is encouraged. This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about our program and meet the faculty. The interview process with begin promptly at 7:30am the morning of your interview date.

Do you recommend a hotel to stay at for my interview?

Sleep Inn and Suites (5555 South Donnybrook Ave., Tyler, TX) offers a special rate of $59 for UTHSCT residency candidates. The Surgery Program Coordinator can provide a booking link.

What if I cannot make it on my interview date assigned?

If an applicant is assigned an interview date that presents a conflict, we should be notified immediately so we can schedule an alternate date.

 

Will the Program allow Moonlighting?

We do allow moonlighting PGY 3 -5.

How many Residents does your Program accept?

We have 3 categorical PGY1 positions each year for a full complement of 15 residents. We currently do not offer preliminary positions but plan to in the future.

Where will my rotations be located?

  • UT Health Tyler (Primary site)
  • UT Health Science Center at Tyler
  • UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas (Burns, Transplant and Pediatrics)
  • UT Health Jacksonville (Colorectal Surgery)

Do you accept foreign graduates?

 Yes, (Need to complete step 1 and step 2 and ECGMG certified)

Does your program sponsor Visas? If yes, what type?

Yes, our program sponsors J-1 visas. We are unable to sponsor an H1 visa.

Do you accept Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine graduates?

Yes, we accept both MDs and DOs

Do you accept COMLEX? 

Yes

Do you have a Simulation Lab/Curriculum?

Yes
