The University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center (HSC) is the only university academic medical center in Northeast Texas and is one of six academic medical centers in the University of Texas system. The Northeast Texas area spans just over 25,000 square miles and is also known as the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Region 4/5. The population of Northeast Texas is just over 1.5 million people, over half of whom live in a rural area.
The Fellowship Program in Health Service Psychology provides a high-quality training experience for future psychologists interested in making a clinical and academic contribution to their field. Broadly speaking, our program offers trainees an opportunity to develop advance competencies in clinical psychology through an in-depth experience Consultation/Liaison Health Psychology; and Integrated Primary Care Psychology and General Clinical Psychology and College/Sports Medicine. The program embraces the practitioner-scholar model by valuing both clinical work and academic endeavors within its curriculum structure.
Postdoctoral Fellows follow a carefully planned training curriculum combining two (2) hours per week of individual supervision and a minimum of 2 hours of formal didactic seminars, up to 14 hours per week of clinical work in an outpatient clinic, up to 16 hours per week in specialized medical settings associated with a specific clinical focus (psycho-oncology/ College Counseling, and 4 hours per week of administrative time for research/scholarship. Fellows gain the supervised clinical experience and post-doctoral training (2000 hours) needed to qualify for licensure and the independent practice of psychology in the state of Texas.
Our Postdoctoral Fellowship program emphasizes attainment of advanced competencies in health service psychology while simultaneously preparing Fellows to serve in specific clinical areas: end of life care, grief and bereavement; consultation-liaison health psychology; or integrated primary care psychology.
HSC offers two one-year, full-time postdoctoral fellowship positions, which typically begins September 1 and ends 12 months later. Each 2000-hour program is designed to provide comprehensive clinical and didactic experiences to support advanced professional practice and meet licensure requirements for psychologists in the state of Texas.
Our focus is on Clinical Health Psychology. We will however, provide training and supervision for General Clinical Psychology. A firm grounding in evidenced based therapies in general clinical psychology is necessary for a clinician to practice.
- One Clinical Health Psychology Fellow will receive specialized training in Clinical Health psychology, focusing on the biopsychosocial approach to evaluation, treatment, and consultation in interdisciplinary medical settings
- One generalist Clinical Psychology Fellow will focus on evidence-based mental health evaluation, treatment, and consultation, among children, adolescents, and adults in interdisciplinary medical settings across the UT system.
- All Fellows may have the opportunity to mentor and provide supervision to doctoral psychology interns, participate in didactics with family medicine and psychiatry residents, and present didactic lectures during the academic year.
- Research and scholarly activity opportunities are available in all fellowship programs.

HSC Postdoctoral Psychology Fellowship Programs are not accredited by the American Psychological Association.
