About the Program
The Transitional Year Residency is sponsored by The University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center (UTHSC), and the UTHSC Internal Medicine Residency Program. Through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), 12 Transitional Year Residents will begin their training in June of 2023. UTHSCT Transitional Year residents will receive a well-rounded training experience with rotations in internal medicine wards, general surgery, inpatient cardiology, neurology, intensive care, night float, ambulatory care, emergency medicine, and multiple electives to help them gain further experience in their field of interest. Offering multiple tracks, residents will be prepared to enter Advanced Program training in neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, preventive medicine, or radiation oncology. A surgery track is also offered for those who have interest in pursuing acceptance into a surgical residency program upon completion of the Transitional Year.
About The University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, in partnership with Ardent Health Services has formed the UT Health East Texas Health System, a 10-hospital, 54-clinic health system providing quality care across the entire East Texas region. The Graduate Medical Education Committee at UTHSC provides oversight for multiple other programs within the institution including Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Family Medicine, Occupational Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Psychiatry. Multiple fellowship programs are currently available including cardiology, sports medicine, psychology, child and adolescent psychiatry, hospice and palliative care, and gastroenterology. In the fall of 2023, UTHSCT will also welcome its inaugural class of the newly formed UT Tyler School of Medicine. With the development of both undergraduate and graduate medical education programs, the UTHSCT and UT Health East Texas health systems are determined to provide the best in medical education, healthcare services, and innovative research to the East Texas community.
About UT Health East Texas and Clinical Sites
The primary training site for the UTHSC-Tyler Transitional Year Residency Program is the UT Health Tyler hospital which is located in the heart of Tyler’s midtown medical community. UT Health Tyler hospital is the flagship facility of the UT Health East Texas system and serves as the hub of the region’s 10-hospital system, over 50 outpatient clinics, and over 600 physicians who serve over 1 million East Texans in the region. As a 501-bed comprehensive medical facility with a level 1 trauma center, the UT Health Tyler hospital serves the region’s diverse patient population. The medical staff includes general internal medicine, hospitalists, general surgeons and surgical specialists, and a full complement of medical subspecialty faculty who are eager to invest in training future physicians in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. The internal medicine ambulatory site is located at the Family Circle of Care – West Gentry Health Center, which is the home of the Internal Medicine Residency Continuity Clinic. Additional ambulatory clinic sites are located at the UTHSC North Campus as well as local private clinic offices, all of which are within an approximately 15-minute commute from UT Health Tyler.
Resident Wellness
The UTHSC-Tyler places a strong emphasis on the wellbeing of all faculty, staff, residents, and students, through the implementation of an Institutional Wellbeing Committee which meets regularly to ensure the availability of adequate wellness resources. The Employee Assistance Program, which is available to all UTHSC-Tyler employees, offers counseling services, financial guidance, burnout surveys, and multiple other resources to aid in the prevention of burnout and the improvement of overall wellness. The Transitional Year Residency Program will also sponsor wellness events including a team-building event during orientation, and other wellness activities throughout the year.
